Caplan’s has diversified its inventory and offers Vera Bradley purses, accessories, and travel items.
Caplan’s Jewelry Store has been a family-owned mainstay business in downtown Weston since 1927, with the current owners at the helm since 1970.
“Caplan’s was started by my wife’s great-uncle in 1927,” said owner Dave Glover. “My wife, Terry, and I bought the business in 1970 and have been here 46 years. My daughter, Melissa Fox, has been working here for 20 years.”
Terry’s maiden name is Caplan, and Dave and Terry learned the jewelry business from Terry’s aunt and uncle, Dave said. “Terry’s grandfather opened a jewelry store in Clarksburg a long time ago, and then his brother opened this one. Owning jewelry stores is a family tradition.”
“I enjoy working in a small town and working with the customers,” Melissa said. “I do sales and bookkeeping and have worked here in the store since I was 16 years old.”
The store employs four full-time employees and two part-time employees, Dave said.
Caplan’s inventory includes rings, necklaces, engagement rings, fancy rings, watches and diamonds and colored stones, as well as custom-made jewelry, Dave said.
“Our merchandise is 90 percent American-made. We deal mostly with mom-and-pop suppliers all over the country,” he said.
Business has been good and steady throughout the years they’ve been open, Terry said.
“We’re very pleased that we’ve stayed busy all these years,” she said.
“We’re the only jewelry store in town now,” Dave said. “We wait on third and fourth generations of customers. We don’t have customers; we have friends.”
Caplan’s has diversified its inventory, which improves business, Terry said.
“We’ve been carrying Vera Bradley for 10 years — purses, accessories, scarves, travel luggage, lotion and perfumes,” she said. “Customers come in for one item, like a purse, and then they also buy a piece of jewelry. Or they come in for a watch, and leave with both a watch and a scarf. Having a variety of products improves business.”
Business has actually increased over the years due to the fact that Caplan’s is the only jewelry store left in Weston.
“There are not many independent jewelry stores left,” Dave said.
The business has changed some over the years, Dave said.
“For example, we used to sell china and sterling flatware, but stopped because there wasn’t a need,” he said.
Caplan’s also is involved in community-minded events.
Caplan’s Jewelry and the Theresa Snaith Hospital Auxiliary have worked together for decades on the annual Gold Sale planned for this Thursday in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Boardroom.
The event is a fundraiser for the Auxiliary to help provide much needed items like better signage and bariatric equipment. On sale will be diamonds, gemstones, Black Hills Gold, 14K Gold Chains, Vera Bradley, and watches. The sale is from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Caplan’s Jewelry Store is open Monday through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, the store is open on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 1-5 p.m.
