West Virginia International Yeager Airport is making plans to update its terminal.
The airport authority is putting a hold on the Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Airfield, Safety, and Terminal Improvement Project. Instead, they will focus on the 77-year-old terminal building.
The airport is aiming to apply for terminal grant funding through the FAA’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law - Airport Terminal Program, which has set aside $5 billion for competitive grants for airport terminal development projects. The airport's main goal is to compete for terminal funding to modernize and renovate the terminal building. Future plans include extending the main runway to 7,000 feet.
Currently, the airport offers nonstop flights on several airlines including American, Delta, United, and Breeze.

According to a Charleston Gazette article, airport authority members “feel runway expansion needs to be the bigger priority in accommodating the larger aircrafts that are flying into the airport on a daily basis. Longtime airport board member Allen Tackett said that renovating the terminal would be like putting lipstick on a pig.”
Oh, BROTHER.
The “larger aircrafts” are doing just fine, thank you very much. The runways even handle those gigantic C-5 Galaxies. What does Allen Tackett expect, Airbus A380’s to be lining up to land? It’s never going to happen. The populations of Charleston and West Virginia are shrinking. Corporate billionaires from other countries are not beating a path to Charleston just to hobnob with the governor, and burying MOST of Coonskin Park just to reconfigure the airport’s runway will not change that.
And Allen Tackett really put his foot in his mouth with the "lipstick on a pig" remark.
