Wing Toby Okani, most recently at UIC, has committed to the Mountaineer program, as first reported by On3Sports. Okani visited WVU on April 13, and played at UIC for two seasons (2022-24) after two years at Duquesne.
A native of West Orange, New Jersey, the 6-8, 210-pound Okani started 63 of the 65 games in which he suited up for with the Flames. In 2022-23, he averaged 11 points over 31.7 minutes per game, and backed that up in 2023-24 with 11.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest while playing 32.3 minutes per outing.
Okani had 65 blocks and 49 steals in his final season at UIC, and had an epic 51-minute performance in UIC’s 107-105 three-overtime loss to Drake and now-WVU head coach Darian DeVries. Okani scored 31 points in that contest while hitting five of his eight 3-point attempts.
Over his UIC career, he shot 41.8% from the field and 30.5% from 3-point range while recording 105 blocks and 75 steals.
At Duquesne (2020-22), he started 25 contests over two seasons while playing in 48 games overall, putting up averages of 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest.
Okani is familiar with adjusting to new teams and locations, as he also played for three different high schools and prep schools prior to college. He played at West Orange (NJ) High School up through his junior season, then was on squads at St. Benedict’s Prep (NJ) and Cushing Academy (MA) in his final two years before entering college.
West Virginia’s anticipated roster for the 2024-25 season continues to be a work in progress, and now includes Okani along with forwards Amani Hansberry, Tucker DeVries and Ofri Naveh, along with guards Aden Tagaloa-Nelson, KJ Tenner and Sencire Harris.
