Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, with a few days remaining in his term, joined the next governor's chief of staff Jan. 12 to talk about the development he hopes to leave as his legacy.
As Tomblin nears his finish line, he hopes Rock Creek Development Park will follow suit. He unveiled a strategic plan with GAI Consultants, which was crafted with POWER grant funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
GAI Consultants performed a marketing analysis and created a strategic plan “to ensure the state is taking full advantage of the opportunities at Rock Creek Development Park,” according to a news release from Tomblin’s office.
“This plan will help ensure that Rock Creek Development Park and our vision for a stronger and more economically diverse West Virginia will continue as a priority for years to come,” Tomblin said in a news release. “I'm grateful to have the support of Governor-elect Jim Justice as I pass the torch for this project that means so much to me.”
Justice said he had “full faith” in Justice’s commitment to diversifying business in the state.
Tomblin first spoke of his idea to transform the former Hobet surface mine site during his 2016 State of the State address. The property straddles Boone and Lincoln counties.
Nick Casey, who will be chief of staff for Governor-elect Jim Justice, said Justice is “as proud” of the project as Tomblin is.
“Once you have a chance to look at the opportunity this presents for, not just Southern West Virginia, but for Charleston and the entire region, it's really overwhelming in a very, very positive way," Casey said.
