WESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — In celebration of National Volunteers Week, Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital applauded more than 20 community individuals during the second-annual Lewis County Volunteers Dinner.
Held in St. Matthew United Methodist Church’s fellowship hall in Weston, the volunteers from at least nine nonprofit organizations enjoyed a covered dish dinner while learning about their fellow groups and socializing.
“Without volunteers, you can’t really succeed as a community,” hospital Chief Administrative Officer Kevin Stalnaker said. “We want to thank everyone for all the hard work that they’re doing. This is just a small token of our thanks for those that volunteer in Lewis County. There are plenty of opportunities.”
Vicky Allen, of Alum Bridge, began working with the hospital’s Theresa Snaith Hospital Auxiliary after a 33-year career at William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital. She even recruited Geneva Lamb to also volunteer in the Stonewall Jackson gift shop after retiring.
“I just do it because I like to do it. I don’t do it for a pat on the back,” Allen said. “I love people, I love talking to people and I like to pray with people. It’s rewarding.”
Others at the dinner included county volunteers from Our Neighbor (Lewis County’s food and clothing pantry via referral in Weston), Sleep in Heavenly Peace (volunteers who combined with the Harrison County chapter provide beds, pillows and bedding to youth in need) and Lewis County First (a charitable group that develops Lewis County’s communities through manual labor projects, such as Main Avenue’s Little Brick Building and Holt Square, and highway or cemetery upkeep).
“I appreciate them all,” Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Outreach Coordinator Julia Spelsberg said. “They’ll all wonderful volunteers.”
Kim Liston, Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital’s community programs coordinator, discussed the eight dimensions of wellness as part of her keynote address. Liston said wellness is based on culture, environment, relationships or experiences and requires active awareness.
“I love the outreach, because we do a lot of education in the community. I always try to make it meaningful and connect why it’s important,” the 12-year employee who also trains volunteers said. “I have a big service background, so this job fits really well with what I’m interested in.”
Mon Health Preston Memorial volunteers were to be honored during the hospital’s award ceremony at Camp Dawson on Thursday.
“They don’t always like to be recognized, but they do such good work,” Liston said.
At the end of the dinner, Liston selected Our Neighbor as the winner of a $100 raffle. Director Shonda Hicks said the check will probably be spent on food to give to clients.
“If anybody knows of anyone who needs anything, have them please call 304-269-6327,” Hicks said. “We try to be as flexible as possible.”
Leftover food was taken to local pantries.
