A recent article in your publication mentioned the $1.4 million allocated for the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center (RGPAC) in the city’s 2024-2025 budget. While accurate, this might lead some to believe the theater is a financial strain on taxpayers.
Here’s the important part: the RGPAC generates $1.4 million in income through its operations, making its net operating cost to the city zero. This includes all personnel, benefits, and building maintenance.
The debt service for the RGPAC construction is separate from the operating budget. It’s paid from the city’s 1% sales tax revenue, which is estimated to generate $5 million this year. The annual RGPAC bond payment is $437,000, which is less than 9% of the budgeted sales tax revenue.
In short, the RGPAC offers a vibrant calendar of events (nine in April alone!) and contributes significantly to Clarksburg’s commercial, social, and entertainment scene, all at a minimal net cost to our citizens.
