While Bob Huggins’ days as West Virginia University’s basketball coach have clearly ended, his commitment to the people of the Mountain State continues.
Huggins, whose personal trials and tribulations brought to an end his Hall of Fame career as of now, continues to keep his word on efforts to help West Virginians, especially those battling cancer.
In honor of his mother, Huggins established the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment, and for the past 12 years he has held fundraisers to seed the effort.
This year’s event will be Saturday at Mylan Park, with the celebrity guest being legendary baseball star Pete Rose.
Bob Huggins easily could have walked away from this effort. But that isn’t who he is. Instead, he chose to continue to honor his mother while helping West Virginians in need of cancer treatment.
“The Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment believes West Virginians deserve a first-class opportunity to fight cancer. Donations are specifically allocated to ensure every patient receives timely, accessible and high-quality care led by the most advanced clinicians across Vandalia Health,” the endowment’s website says.
“The efforts of Coach Huggins and the commitments of hundreds of others continue to bolster his fund. As of late 2023, over $20 million has been raised for the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment. All proceeds stay here, at home, to help West Virginians,” the website says.
We applaud the efforts of Huggins and the Norma Mae Huggins Endowment, as well as the hundreds of supporters over the years. They are truly making a difference in West Virginia.
