GRAFTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Sammie “Sam” McCloy, 75, of Flemington, WV, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024, at the Grafton City Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in Clarksburg on June 16, 1948, a son of the late Ralph and Freda McCloy.
In addition to his parents Sammie was preceded in death by three siblings: Ralph McCloy, Agnes Hill, and Mary Moore.
Sammie is survived by Patricia Kay “Patty” (Whitehair) McCloy, and they were together for 52 years; two children: son, Samuel Patrick McCloy, and wife Mary Deaton McCloy of Meadland, and daughter, Jessica Ann McCloy Bolyard, and husband Jeremy Bolyard of Grafton; three grandchildren: Cooper Patrick McCloy, Taylor Bolyard, and Ellie Bolyard; three sisters: Norm Whipkey and husband Paul of Clarksburg, Linda Haynes and husband Steve of Bridgeport, and Sandra McCloy of Clarksburg; sister-in-law, Joan McCloy of Grafton; brother-in-law, Tom Moore of Flemington; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Sam was a graduate of Flemington High School and served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, something he was very proud of. He received various training through the military and also worked in the equipment store. Early on, Sam worked in the coal mines, but went on to work for AFG Fourco Glass for many years until his retirement.
Sam enjoyed golfing and never missed an opportunity to play wherever he was. He was known for his avid walking over the years at the Flemington IOOF, rain or shine, and calculated he done about 65K miles during his lifetime. Sam was a sports fanatic, loved watching sporting events, and especially attending those of his grandchildren. Watching western shows and movies was another hobby Sam enjoyed. His greatest love, however, was his grandchildren. They were his pride and joy.
Family and friends will be received at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home, 950 George Washington Hwy., Grafton, WV, on Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. with Pete Somers presiding. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, where full military graveside honors will be accorded.
