NEWTON, N.C. (WV News) — Roger McGee Nettles, 88, passed from this life on Thursday, March 21, 2024, in Newton, North Carolina.
His faith, sense of humor, love for others, and positive attitude during months of illness were an encouragement to many.
Roger died peacefully, surrounded by his family, and clearly looking forward to his heavenly home and reunion with loved ones who had gone before.
Born July 10, 1935, in Widen, West Virginia, he was the son of Everett and Olive Nettles.
Roger attended Sutton High School and served in the United States Army. He was an entrepreneur, owning and running several businesses over the years. He worked in the print industry as a proofreader and linotype machine operator, starting with the Braxton Democrat, and later working at the Charleston Gazette and Government Printing Office.
Roger owned and operated cable systems, a pizza parlor, an ice cream shop, rental property, and for many years the 79’er Restaurant and Kwik-Pik convenience store and gas station in Burnsville, WV. He also remained an independent insurance agent throughout his lifetime, earning several awards.
Roger was concerned with his community and volunteered in various organizations. He was very active in the Burnsville Lions Club, and took special pride in Boy Scout Troop 224, which he founded and led as Scoutmaster.
Roger always had a soft spot in his heart for children, regularly passing out free candy and ice cream. He provided community firework displays and took community children to Pittsburgh ball games.
Roger never met a stranger and loved socializing, often going from table to table in the 79’er to visit with customers. He always found time to talk with and encourage those who were struggling.
He lived life to the fullest and always had a joke (or several) for those he met. Roger was there when an employee had a need and was also there to help travelers who ran into problems on the road. His love, concern, and support for family and friends could always be counted on.
Roger is survived by his son, Jonathan Nettles, and wife Patricia (Tinkerbell) Nottingham, of Kingwood, WV; his daughter, Teena LaMorte, and her husband, Ron LaMorte, of Mooresville, NC; three grandsons, Keith Nettles of Portland, OR, Nick LaMorte of Mooresville, NC, and Jared LaMorte of Austin, TX; and one sister, Edra Lou Nettles Marple of Jacksonville, FL.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; three brothers, Jim, Lynn, and Gail; and two sisters, Doris Bonnett and Tootsie Ellison.
According to his wishes, no services are planned.
