BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WV News) — Bridgeport City Council unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance that would begin the process of rezoning a portion of the White Oaks Business Park.
If passed on second reading at the next regular session of council, the ordinance would effectively rezone an 11.46-acre tract in White Oaks from a B-2 classification to an R-3, which would be from business to residential use.
White Oaks has expanded its residential footprint and seeks to add 41 homes in a new development.
“White Oaks, for the last few years, they have been discussing putting in a housing development. This is their second location. They’re doing the exact same thing that they were going to do in the first location, so this step is just procedural. The Planning Commission has unanimously recommended to rezone this parcel,” said Andrea Kerr, Bridgeport’s director of community development.
White Oaks has already subdivided the parcel of land, awaiting council’s approval, she said.
Kerr predicted that streets in the new development will qualify to be accepted as city streets, should council a vote to add them to Bridgeport’s street maintenance cycle.
To begin Monday’s meeting, council honored Bridgeport High School junior Amelia Romano as a state champion swimmer.
“Amelia won the state title in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:59.91. Amelia also finished fourth place in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:02.14. Then she, along with three teammates, placed eighth in the 200-meter relay with a time of 2:05.8 seconds,” said Mayor Andy Lang, reading a certificate of recognition.
“It’s an honor to be able to accomplish, and I’d like to thank all of the people who helped me along the way,” Romano said.
Council took up two items in an executive session to end the meeting — discussing a city manager update and considering authorizing the city manager to hire special counsel.
Bridgeport City Council will meet for its next regular session at 7 p.m. on May 13.
