Salem Elementary spared, while Liberty-Robert C. Byrd merger, WI-Mountaineer consolidation and North View move approved by Harrison County (West Virginia) Board of Education
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — The Harrison County Board of Education has approved a plan for several schools to be closed and combined effective the 2025-26 school year.
The plan will still need to be approved by the West Virginia Board of Education.
Liberty High School will be closed and merged into Robert C. Byrd High School and Mountaineer Middle and Washington Irving Middle will be consolidated into the Liberty building.
The Liberty-RCB vote was 3-2, with President Gary Hamrick and Tom Tucker opposed. Frank Devono, Doug Hogue and Mary Francis Smith voted yes.
The Mountaineer closure and merger was passed 4-1, with Tucker opposed. WI was approved 4-1, with Tucker also being the only no vote.
North View Elementary will move into the Mountaineer Middle building, however Salem was spared on a unanimous vote. The North View vote was 3-2, with Devono and Tucker opposed.
If the state approves, the changes will take place in time for the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.
