CLARKSBURG — Bridgeport’s boys and girls tennis teams breezed to wins over Robert C. Byrd Thursday on the Flying Eagles’ home courts.
The Indians boys scored a 6-1 win, while the girls swept the Eagles, 7-0.
No. 1 singles Cam Horner defeated Jesse Spear, 8-3. Salvatore Cava edged Edgar Castro, 8-6, in No. 2 singles, while Bryce Williams downed Ezra Calef, 8-2 and Michael Fouts blanked Logan Hartsock, 8-0.
In doubles, Horner and Williams beat Spear and Castro, 8-1, Cava and Fouts defeated Calef and Hartsock, 8-4, for the Indians.
The duo of Alex Farrell and Luke Rinehart earned the Eagles’ lone win, an 8-3 victory over Rex Underwood and Emery Smith.
In girls singles, No. 1 Alexis Alastanos rolled to an 8-0 win over Emily Hart. Jenna McKee followed with an 8-5 win over Allie Yoho. Allie Lamm earned an 8-2 win over Maria Swiger, and Emily Hefner downed Haley Sommerville, 8-2.
In doubles, Alastanos and McKee defeated Hart and Yoho, 8-4, while Lamm and Hefner beat Swiger and Sommerville, 8-1, and the pair of Sundus Lateef-Leigh Horner captured an 8-5 win over Tori Pittman and Lauren Godfrey.
Robert C. Byrd returns to action next Thursday, playing host to Lewis County at 4:30 p.m.
• LIBERTY, FAIRMONT SENIOR SPLIT: The Liberty girls rolled to a 7-0 win, while the Polar Bears boys nipped the Mountaineers 4-3.
No. 1 singles Lauren Welsh defeated Katie Nestor, 8-4. Richa Riggleman downed Megan Branch, 8-4, and Melissa Crammer beat Alissa Link, 8-4. No. 4 singles Smantha McIntire rounded out the singles domination with an 8-1 victory over Maya Mathai.
In doubles play, Welsh and Crammer downed Nestor and Branch, 8-5, Riggleman and McIntire beat Link and Mathai, 8-4, while Alex Beezel and Kylie Womeldorff beat Katelyn Wilt and Avery Towns, 8-3.
In boys play, Liberty No. 1 player Nick Sears beat Grant Holbert, 8-6 and the Mountaineers’ No. 4 Landon Davis defeated Trey Gircelli, 8-3. Fairmont Senior’s No. 2 Logan Orton beat Kane Clevenger, 8-0, while the Bears’ No. 3 player, Michael Buaniato downed Jason Morris, 8-2.
In doubles action, Holbert and Orton beat Sears and Clevenger, 8-2, while Buaniato and Gircelli downed Morris and Davis, 8-2. Liberty’s No. 3 doubles team of Nick Cain and brandon channel downed Nathan Kolar and Josh Rock, 8-1.
The Mountaineers will be back in action Monday against East Fairmont at Fairmont State University.
Softball
• Liberty 15, Fairmont Senior 0, three innings: Liberty erupted for 15 runs in the first inning and coasted from there over Fairmont Senior in Big 10 Conference girls softball action at Liberty High School.
Junior center fielder Presley Lamm provided the big stick with a home run, double and single to pace the Mountaineers’ 11-hit attack.
Megan Morton was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, while Lexi Carder went 2-for-2 with two runs and 2 RBIs, and Cheyenne Clayton was also 2-for-2 with two runs. Kaylee Ritter drove in a pair of runs.
Carder pitched the first two innings to pick up the win, giving up four hits and striking out three.
Ali Shaver was 2-for-2 to pace the Polar Bears.
