BRIDGEPORT — Bridgeport standout distance runner Ian Frailey signed his letter-of-intent with West Virginia Wesleyan where he will be a member of the Bobcats’ cross country and track teams.
The signing took place on Wednesday in the Bridgeport High School library in front of a crowd of family, friends, teammates and coaches.
“The business program is really good there,” Frailey said. “I knew before I even thought about running that I wanted to go there for school. After I visited, I loved the campus. The running is just extra.
“It’s exciting. There are so many opportunities right in front of me.”
When it comes to running, Frailey has been all business for the Indians since his family moved to the area from Illinois prior to the start of his freshman season.
He’s been an integral part of the Indians’ cross country team that won state titles in 2013 and 2014, while finishing second last fall. The Indians also captured a track and field title in 2014.
Currently, Frailey ranks in the top 10 in the Class AA in the 1,600 and 3,200 and has been part of the Indians’ 4x400 and 4x800 teams that are also ranked in the top 10.
In Tuesday’s Harrison County meet, Frailey won the 800 with a time of 2:04.99 that would put him in the top 10 in a fifth event. He also won the mile, placed second in the 3,200 and was part of the first-place 4x400 team to help the Indians capture their 14th straight county title.
His best time in the mile this season so far is 4:34.37 and his best 3,200 time is 10:01.13.
Frailey said getting his signing out of the way on Wednesday was nice because he can turn his full focus to the last three meets of the season.
Bridgeport has the Big 10 on Friday, regionals next week and the state meet scheduled for May 20-21.
“Ian is a great kid,” Bridgeport cross country and boys track coach Jon Griffith said. “When they moved in here from Illinois we were thrilled. He came out and was very talented. He has worked hard the entire time he has been here. I think he’s going to do real well as West Virginia Wesleyan. Coach (Jesse) Skiles has a great program and he will fit in real well there.”
Four former teammates at Bridgeport are currently with the Bobcats in Dahlton Kittle, Matt Dearth, Rachel Fulks and Zach Abbott. The pipeline between the Indians and Bobcats has worked out well for both parties.
“I talked to them and I know coach Skiles is great,” Frailey said. “They gave me advice on how it would be and that I would like it at Wesleyan. That definitely helped with my decision.”
