MORGANTOWN — Mitchell Tolman and Ty Moore had three hits and two RBIs apiece to lead the West Virginia Black Bears to a 7-3 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday at Monongalia County Ballpark.
Tolman finished 3-for-4, while Moore was 3-for-5 with one run.
After surrendering a first-inning run, the Black Bears (36-31) took a 2-1 lead in the second. Tolman’s sacrifice fly scored Albert Baur for the first run, before Christian Kelley singled to score Casey Hughston.
But Mahoning Valley (29-36) regained the lead in the top of the third when Daniel Salters doubled to plate Willi Castro and Ka’ai Tom.
The lead was short-lived, however, as West Virginia responded with four runs in its half of the third.
Moore tripled to score Daniel Arribas, before Ke’Bryan Hayes reached on an error with Moore scoring on the play. Hughston’s sacrifice fly scored Hayes for the third run of the inning and Tolman singled to score Baur, making it 6-3.
Moore’s sixth-inning single scored Kelley for the game’s final run.
The Black Bears roughed up Scrappers’ starting pitcher Sam Hentges. Hentges allowed six runs on five hits and five walks in 2 2-3 innings while suffering the loss.
Nick Hibbing pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, before Tate Scioneaux struck out three over three scoreless innings to record the save.
West Virginia, which increased its lead in the wild card race to 1 1/2 games, is back in action today at 5:05 p.m., when it plays at the Batavia Muckdogs.
