MORGANTOWN — Dario Agrazal has been the West Virginia Black Bears most consistent starting pitcher throughout the season.
In Thursday’s game against the Williamsport Crosscutters, Agrazal saved one of his finest outings of the season for perhaps his final regular-season start.
The right-hander allowed one run in six innings to lead West Virginia to a 2-1 win at Monongalia County Ballpark, allowing the Black Bears to hold a one-game lead in the wild card race over the State College Spikes.
West Virginia leads all other wild card contenders by at least two games with four contests left.
Agrazal allowed only six hits and did not issue a walk while striking out four.
He gave way to Stephan Meyer, who tossed three shutout innings and allowed one hit with four strikeouts to pick up the save.
Williamsport (44-28) got a two-out home run from Josh Tobias in the first, but West Virginia knotted the game in its half of the second.
Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Danniel Arribas, and the Black Bears took their first and only lead in the fourth on Casey Hughston’s sac fly, which again scored Arribas.
Arribas, Mitchell Tolman, Christian Kelley and Ryan Nagle had two hits apiece for West Virginia.
Tobias was 3-for-4 in defeat.
Alejandro Arteaga allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings to take the loss.
The Black Bears’ final home game is at 7:05 p.m. today as they go for the sweep. They finish the season with three straight road games at the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, who are currently 31-40.
State College knocked off the Batavia Muckdogs, 5-2, on Thursday,
The Spikes and Muckdogs play again today, before the Spikes end the season by playing the Crosscutters in three games — two in State College and one in Williamsport.
