SHINNSTON — Rev. Karl R. Wohinc, 77, of Summit Park, formerly of Shinnston, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at his residence. He was born in Weston Sept. 5, 1937, a son of the late John Wohinc, Jr., and Frieda A. Yuchtmann Wohinc.
He attended high school at St. Charles College Seminary in Catonsville, MD. He then went on to attend St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore and received a master’s degree from The Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Joseph H. Hodges at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling, WV, May 25, 1963.
He served as a teacher at St. Joseph Seminary in Mt. View, Calif., from 1963-1965; at St. Charles College from 1966-1967; at St. Edward’s Seminary in Kenmore, Wash., from 1967-1976; and St. Joseph Seminary in Vienna, WV, from 1976-1978. He served as associate pastor at St. Patrick Parish in Weston from 1978-1980 and as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Holden, WV, from 1980-1984 and St. Ann Parish in Shinnston from 1984-2012. He also served as dean of the Clarksburg Deanery from 1990-1993 and as a faithful friar for the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2114 from 2010-2011.
Father Wohinc retired from active ministry May 25, 2012. He served as chaplain to the Serra Club of Clarksburg in 2014.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sheila Anne Gracy.
He is survived by nephews David and Deborah Gracy of Raleigh, N.C.; John and Wendy Gracy of Dunedin, Fla.; Karl and Debbie Gracy of Tarpon Springs, FL.; and G. Andrew and Heather Gracy of Dunedin. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gregory Gracy of Dunedin and seven great- nieces and -nephews, Megan, Mollie, Matthew, Julia, Jillian, Jollie and Jessica.
Reception of the body will be at St. Ann Church in Shinnston Friday, at 1 p.m. Visitation will follow from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m., and the Vigil will be at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Most Rev. Michael J. Bransfield at St. Ann Church, March 28, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.perinefunerals.com.
