SUMMIT PARK — Because of her medical condition, authorities have not been able to speak to a woman who was mauled by five dogs on Monday, Harrison County Sheriff Albert Marano said.
The 54-year-old Summit Park woman remains in Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was bitten on the torso and neck by the boxers and received multiple injuries, Marano said. The incident occurred about 10 a.m. Monday on Columbia Mine Road.
Two of the dogs had to be destroyed Monday as deputies attempted to capture them, Marano said. Three others were caught and taken to the Harrison County Animal Control shelter.
“Further investigation showed that the owner did not have any paperwork to show that the dogs had received rabies shots. They also had to be destroyed to be tested for rabies,” Marano said. “We’re waiting for those results and expect them in the very near future. They had to be sent to Charleston for testing.”
Law enforcement have found out the dogs were at the Summit Park home as a temporary situation.
“The homeowner agreed to hold the dogs while the gentleman was in between housing locations,” Marano said. “The investigation is continuing.”
The victim, who was familiar with the dogs, went to a cage in the neighbor’s yard to pet them. It is unclear whether she let them out of the cage or they escaped after they attacked her and then ran off, he said.
