WESTON — Weston City Council this week adopted a policy setting procedures for randomly testing city employees for illegal drug use.
During a regular meeting Monday night, city council unanimously passed the policy to screen safety-sensitive employees such as police officers, firefighters and street department workers.
“It will benefit our employees as well as our citizens,” City Manager Michelle Allen. “I’m glad we got that approved.”
Council approved doing random drug testing of employees last March, but a policy spelling out procedures has never been in place, Allen said.
Under the policy, the city reserves the right to test employees whenever there is a reasonable suspicion they are using or have used illegal drugs or alcohol.
The legal use of prescription drugs is permitted on the job if it doesn’t impair employees’ work performance, according to the policy.
Employees found to have a drug or alcohol problem are subject to disciplinary action and may request time off to go through rehabilitation, according to the policy.
In other business, council agreed to return the $25 filing fee to two former candidates for city offices up for election June 9, City Clerk Kristin Droppleman said.
W.M. Woofter, a former mayoral candidate, and Ella Clem, a former hopeful in the Ward II council race, will receive the refund because they bowed out before the deadline to do so, Droppleman said.
Woofter, who also was once a candidate in the Ward III council race, and John Bell, a former hopeful in the Ward II council race, will not receive a refund because they withdrew after the deadline, Droppleman said.
Council also:
— Approved hiring a part-time temporary employee at $10 an hour to fill a vacancy in the street department.
— Approved employing three high school students during the summer.
— Appointed Holly Watson to the Fairs and Festivals Committee.
