Zackary Scott Watkins, left, awaiting trial on a malicious wounding charge, was appointed a new lawyer on Wednesday.
CLARKSBURG — Deputy marshals and State Police have arrested a man in the Friday night stabbing of a Clarksburg resident, according to the office of Marshal Gary Gaskins.
Zackary Scott Watkins, 35, of Lost Creek, was arrested early Wednesday afternoon at a residence off Buckhannon Pike in Nutter Fort, Supervisory Deputy Marshal Terry Moore said.
Watkins was taken into custody on a state warrant alleging malicious wounding, Moore said. Additionally, Watkins is facing an allegation that he violated his federal supervised release on a conviction for failure to register as a sex offender, Moore said.
The 39-year-old victim was stabbed in the shoulder, stomach, face and elbow, Clarksburg Patrol Officer W.G. Swiger has alleged.
The victim was in stable condition and was expected to be released either Wednesday or the next day from Ruby Memorial Hospital, Swiger said Wednesday.
The stabbing occurred at 700 Locust Ave., Apartment L1, Swiger has alleged. Two others also came to the residence with Watkins, the complaint indicates.
The investigation continues. Additional charges are pending, although the malicious wounding count faced by Watkins will be the most significant allegation, Swiger said.
Watkins was taken for his initial appearance before Harrison Magistrate Frank DeMarco by Swiger and Patrol Officer M.E. Waggamon II.
The defendant was jailed on a $25,000 bond, as well as a motion for detention filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Morgan in the government’s case.
On Aug. 31, 2011, Watkins was sentenced to 1 1/4 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley for failure to register, to be followed by 10 years of supervised release.
In that case investigated by Supervisory Deputy Marshal Moore, Watkins absconded from parole in Michigan on his conviction there for third-degree sexual assault. Watkins was found in Bridgeport by Moore and eventually pleaded guilty.
