CLARKSBURG — The Harrison Commission will consider travel requests and review a bid to continue updating the courthouse’s sprinkler system as part of a light agenda for its regular Thursday meeting.
Commissioners Ron Watson, Bernie Fazzini and Frank Angotti, along with County Administrator Willie Parker, all plan to attend the County Commissioners’ Association of West Virginia’s fall board meeting, scheduled for Sept. 20-21 at Stonewall Resort.
According to a document attached to Thursday’s agenda, the registration fee for the event is $150 per person. It will also cost $129 per night, with a $15 per night resort fee, to lodge on site, according to the document.
The commissioners will vote Thursday to determine whether to authorize using county funds to reimburse expenses related to attending the board meeting.
Watson, who sits on the association’s board and on its Legislative Committee, said one of the main purposes of the meeting will be to discuss the group’s priorities for the 2016 legislative session.
“From our perspective, we’ve got to be vigilant to make dang sure that we are there to either support or oppose — to support things that would be beneficial to our county and to adamantly oppose anything that would not be beneficial to our county,” Watson said.
The commission is also likely to select a bid Thursday for continued work on updating the courthouse’s fire suppression system. The work will be paid for by a grant obtained through the state Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority, officials have said.
The commissioners opened bids for the project during last week’s meeting.
In other business, the commission will consider a pair of requests.
The Glen Elk Village Development Association has submitted a letter to the commission requesting the county’s assistance in improving a local graveyard. The letter asks that the improvement project be added to the list of projects eligible for community service hours through the county’s Community Corrections program.
“We’re doing some revamping and restructuring with our Community Corrections program, and I think what we would do is take that as a possibility, if it’s legal to do it,” Watson said of the request.
The Wallace Volunteer Fire Department has submitted a request for a $2,500 grant from the commission to help put on community festival scheduled for Sept. 18-20 at the fire station.
The commission meets Thursdays at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the county courthouse.
