WESTON — The Small Business Administration will be working with the Lewis County Commission and other county officials to provide education on starting and growing small businesses.
Larry Batten, an economic development specialist with the SBA, addressed commissioners Monday on his agency’s services, specifically “Money Smart for Small Business.”
“Small businesses make up 96 percent of all businesses in West Virginia. My focus is startups and existing businesses. That’s where economic growth comes in,” Batten said. “We offer counseling, training and capital through loan guarantees. We want to build a team with businesses, government and SCORE volunteers to assist in the process.”
Some of the topics covered by “Money Smart for Small Business” include “Planning for a Healthy Business,” “Managing Cash Flow” and “Is Owning a Business a Good Fit for You?”
This is just a sample of the resources available through the SBA, Batten said.
Commission President Agnes Queen said she was interested in setting up a meeting with Lewis Economic Director Mike Herron, commissioners and Batten to do whatever they could to facilitate new and expanded business opportunities in the county.
In other economic development news, Herron reported that a rate order issued by the state Public Service Commission has been sent to all 146 new customers of the $3.6 million Northwest Water Project. In addition to a 6.6 percent increase in rates, a surcharge of $2.68 to $3.25 is anticipated, Herron said.
Also Monday, Queen announced that the county will host a housing summit on Nov. 4, tentatively at Stonewall Resort. A recent study showed a shortage of more than 200 affordable housing units in Lewis County.
“We will work on a list of dilapidated homes in the county,” Queen said. “There is funding available to revamp these properties. The summit will include West Virginia Housing Development, a state economic development representative, local EDA, developers, banks and realtors.”
In other business, the commission:
— Administered the oath of office to Jacob S. VanMeter, who began his duties as a sheriff’s deputy Monday. He is filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Tanner Carder.
VanMeter, 21, originally of Raleigh County, recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Fairmont State University.
“I’m very excited to start with the county. It is what I’ve always wanted to do. My dad is a retired State Police trooper, and my granddad is a retired Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officer,” VanMeter said.
— Reappointed Gene Edwards and Glenn Brown Jr. to the Lewis County Park Board.
— Proclaimed the week of Sept. 18 as Constitution Week at the request of Christine Rumbaugh of the Trans Allegheny Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
— Announced the commission will not meet Monday due to a conflict in schedules. The next meeting will be held Sept. 26.
