CLARKSBURG — Doddridge County experienced major computer glitches late Tuesday night, delaying the county’s election results from its 12 precincts until well past midnight.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve been here this late,” Doddridge County Clerk Beth Rogers said. “I left here shortly before 1:30 a.m.”
Rogers explained the IT problems were not the fault of the iVotronic voting machines, but with the courthouse’s printer.
“Our software to run the reports is called Unity software. We got a new printer recently and used successfully for at least four elections,” Rogers said. “Last night we couldn’t get it to work. The guy from ES&S (Electronic Systems and Software) was here all night trying to fix it; he finally downloaded the results to a jump drive, and we printed out the results from my computer. That fix came about 11:45 p.m.”
Before that happened, they tabulated some of the county race results by hand, she said.
“It was frustrating for candidates and us, since we’re usually one of the first counties to get our results in,” Rogers said. “For the next election, I’ve already budgeted for a new computer and new printer that will be compatible with Unity software.”
The only other problem Doddridge County had Tuesday were the long lines of voters due to the heavy turnout, she said.
“One guy got in line at 7:20 p.m. and didn’t leave until 9:20 p.m.,” she said.
Of the 4,702 registered voters in the county, 2,116 turned out to vote, according to the county’s records. Of those who voted, 1,645 were Republican, 441 were Democrat, and 441 were nonpartisan.
Republican Michele Britton won the nomination for Circuit Clerk, beating out fellow Republicans Lilly Wine and Brent S. Cottrill in unofficial results from Tuesday’s election. Britton won 775 votes, Cottrill came in second with 446, and Wine trailed with 342 votes.
Republican Shawn Glasfell beat out Republican Ralph “Butch” Sandora for County Commissioner, with 916 and 618 votes, respectively.
Mike Headley easily won the county’s nomination for Sheriff on the Republican ticket, beating out J.R. Boyce and Worthy C. Underwood Jr. Headley received 1,182 votes, Boyce had 209 and Underwood received 219.
Laura Pickens won the position of Non-Family Court Judge District I, with 922 votes, compared with Peter J. Conley’s 756 votes.
William “Bill Jack” Curran won the single spot on the Board of Education, with 893 votes, and Randy Plaugher won Conservation District Supervisor with 1,016 votes.
