STONEWOOD — The first woman to be elected mayor of Stonewood took the oath of office Monday night.
Sharon Fazio McIntyre was sworn in by state Delegate Patsy Trecost, D-Harrison, during a brief ceremony at the Stonewood fire hall.
“I’m very excited,” McIntyre said after the ceremony. “Not a lot of people put their faith in a woman, but I’m ready to give it my all and do everything I can for the citizens.”
Trecost also administered the oath of office to Recorder-elect Rich Zorick and town council members-elect Jim Nutter, Danny Carder, Danny Phares, Angie Sipko and Tyler Terango.
The elected officials begin their two-year terms Wednesday.
McIntyre, who was elected the town’s 18th mayor June 9, worked in the town hall for 23 years as a billing clerk and officer manager.
She also served as recorder for eight years and as a council member the past two years.
McIntyre said improving the town’s parks is one of her priorities.
“Our parks are in very bad need of redoing,” McIntyre said. “The children like to play, and I’d like to see upgrades.”
The mayor-elect said there is also cleanup to do following a recently completed waterline replacement project.
Sipko, who was elected to a sixth term on council, said she thinks it’s exciting the voters picked a woman for mayor.
Sipko said there were many years when she was the only woman on council.
“It’s nice to have another woman,” she said. “Men and women look at things differently. I think it’s good to have a mixture of both.”
Sipko said she thinks McIntyre will be an effective mayor — regardless of her gender.
“She worked in the office. She was recorder in the past. She was on council the last two years,” Sipko said. “She’s got the experience.
“And she’s retired,” Sipko added, meaning McIntyre will be more accessible to the citizens.
McIntyre pledged to be just that — accessible.
“I will be 24 hours to their (the citizens’) call if they need it,” McIntyre said.
