PHILIPPI — A 14-year-old student — who was holding numerous students and a teacher hostage with a pistol at Philip Barbour High School — was captured and transported to a local hospital for evaluation, according to State Police.
No one was injured, according to law enforcement.Â
State Police continue to investigate Tuesday's incident to determine a motive.
The initial call to Barbour County 911 came at 1:30 p.m., referencing a person with a gun at the school. State Police Lt. Michael Baylous said officers responded to the scene expecting a "hostage-type situation."
Negotiators eventually convinced the suspect to release all of the hostages, put down his gun and surrender, according to the statement.
All other students were evacuated to the football field, accounted for, and sent home via school buses, according to officials.
During a press conference after the suspect was captured, police would not say whether shots were fired.
Officials said there will be a two-hour delay for Barbour County High School students Wednesday.
U.S. 250 in front of the school was shut down as multiple police agencies responded to the high school.
Officials blocked off a perimeter around the school using caution tape.
Several Barbour County parents called the newspaper to report the incident.
