Bridgeport now has an old-fashioned men’s barbershop downtown, with a modern twist.

MADMAN Barber, Grooming & Muscular Therapy held a grand opening last week after a soft opening the prior week.

The downtown barbershop offers much more than men’s haircuts, according to owners, Melissa Farnsworth and Robert Hurst, who are engaged.

Among the other options include kids cuts, nail and detox services, hand, foot and scalp treatments and muscular therapy.

Paul Mitchell products are offered, as well.

Farnsworth is the nail therapist.

She is also working on a MBA and will be overseeing the business side of operations.

Anne Allen, a longtime local barber, will cut hair.

Hurst trained in massage therapy at Clarksburg Beauty Academy and will practice muscular therapy.

The treatment is not a typical massage because it’s more targeted on certain problem areas by focusing on myoskeletal technique, according to Hurst.

Additional hiring is planned in the future.

The services and appearance of the barbershop were inspired by barbershops of the past, according to the owners.

“We noticed that there weren’t any more of those old-school barber shops,” Farnsworth said. “We saw there was a need in the community for something for the classic gentleman.”

Photos of James Dean and Marilyn Monroe line the walls, while the kids’ rooms display Captain America and Wonder Woman memorabilia.

Men who stop in are also offered a hot towel and a drink.

They can choose from Coca-Cola, coffee, water or a Gentleman Jack and Coke.

Men and women may appreciate a different type of experience at the salon, according to the owners.

They said they hope the gender-specific experience puts customers more at ease.

The owners hope to open another business, a salon exclusively for women, next door later on.

A newsletter will be available with more information.
