CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Republican Moore Capito of Charleston, Kanawha County, is running for the GOP nomination for governor of West Virginia.
Biography:
“Moore Capito is a sixth-generation West Virginian, product of our public schools, and former all-state athlete. As the father of two young kids, the future of our state is personal to Moore. In 2020, Moore successfully captained the critical mission to elect a Republican supermajority in West Virginia’s House of Delegates. Moore is widely recognized as the “Get-It-Done” conservative in the race for governor because he is the only one who has repeatedly turned good conservative ideas into effective public policy. Moore is running for governor to take West Virginia to the next level.”
Do you support the full elimination of West Virginia’s personal income tax?
“As a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, I was proud to vote for the historic tax relief package that reduced the personal income tax by 21%. The legislation establishes a pathway to eliminate the income tax completely in a responsible manner. As governor, I will continue using the same responsible budgeting model that led to last year’s historic tax cuts. The goal will be to accelerate the timetable to elimination. These tax cuts will help families manage the economic strain Joe Biden’s reckless spending and high inflation is causing.”
If elected, what steps would you take to continue the state’s recent streak of high-profile economic development projects and investments like Nucor, BHE Renewables and Form Energy?
”Under the leadership of Gov. Jim Justice, West Virginia has serious momentum and is on the right track toward becoming a 21st-century economic powerhouse. My ‘Next Level Jobs and Opportunity’ plan will focus on three cornerstones to take our state to the next level: 1) build the foundation for sustained growth; 2) elevate West Virginia’s job creators; and 3) invest in workers, innovation, and opportunity. The mission is to make the Mountain State both a destination point for Wild Wonderful adventure and the best place to live, work, play, raise a family, and retire.”
What policies should be put in place to address the ongoing issues with the state’s foster care system?
“As we continue our long recovery from the opioid epidemic, one of the many strains we are facing is the foster care system. Agencies like Child Protective Services are stressed and overwhelmed. Transparency will the hallmark of the Capito Administration in dealing with cases, with the appropriate protections for children’s privacy. The Capito Administration will work with local leaders to create a system that focuses on outcomes that protect our youth in crisis and need. As governor, I will work to make sure that CPS is the last call, not the first call.”
